Davido Incorrectly States Nigeria’s Tribes as ‘Yoruba, Igbo, Benin’
Afrobeat singer Davido has made an inaccurate statement by claiming that Nigeria has only three tribes – Yoruba, Igbo, and Benin. The singer, while hosting American content creator Kai Cenat for a documentary in Lagos, made the assertion. He stated, “We have three tribes in Nigeria. There’s Yoruba. My father is Yoruba. And in Nigeria, wherever your father is from, that’s where you are really from. So my father is Yoruba. My wife is from Igbo. And my mother is from Benin. I’m three tribes in one.”
Contrary to Davido’s statement, the National Bureau of Statistics has reported that there are 371 tribes in Nigeria, with the majority being Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.
